A consultant has recommended that the American Samoa Power Authority harness power from the ocean.

OTEC or ocean thermal energy conversion uses the difference between the temperature of the ocean depths and the surface to generate electricity.

The view coincides with a study in 1990 which identified American Samoa as one of the best sites in the whole South Pacific for the development of OTEC.
