The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has fined an American Samoan business, Langkilde Service Station, ten thousand dollars for alleged federal underground storage tank violations at its facility in Malaloa Village.
The EPA says the service station failed to meet federal requirements to conduct line tightness tests or to use monthly leak detection monitoring on its petroleum piping.
The company's facility includes five underground tanks, three of which are already temporarily closed, with unleaded fuel and kerosene stored in its two operational tanks.
The EPA's Jeff Scott says the agency expects tank owners to properly maintain their tanks to prevent them from leaking.
He says by fining Langkilde the EPA will help ensure American Samoa's fresh water supply and coral reefs are not damaged by negligence.
