Fiji PM expresses concern about Labour party infighting

9:23 am on 3 July 2006

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has expressed concern that the current infighting in the Fiji Labour Party could pose a threat to the operations of the multi-party cabinet.

This is because nine of the ministers in the cabinet come from the Labour Party.

Mr Qarase says any decision to expel a Labour Party member who is in the cabinet would affect the composition of the multi-party cabinet.

The prime minister's concerns come as President Iloilo questioned the legitimacy of Mahendra Chaudhry's leadership of the Labour Party.

This happened after a dissenting faction in the party told the president that Mr Chaudhry had not been re-endorsed as party leader after the May general election and could not nominate its senators.

They have sent their own list of proposed senators to the president, saying the right to nominate senators belongs to the party and not to Mr Chaudhry personally.
