A youth is dead and another is fighting for his life in Papua New Guinea's Angau Memorial Hospital near Lae after an outbreak of fighting between villagers and settlers.

According to the National newspaper, police say the situation remains tense after three youths from the Butibam village were attacked after they had gone to the Wosera settlement to buy beer.

Police say the three were ambushed by some men in front of the clinic at Butibum and two received knife wounds.

One of the youths received deep wounds to his chest and he died from loss of blood.

Several houses belonging to the settlers were then burnt to the ground by Butibum villagers and some families fled the Wosera settlement seeking refuge elsewhere.

Police reinforcements were called in as villagers marched into the settlement but a confrontation was prevented.
