Northern Marianas Government to sack more than 140 staff to cut costs

The Governor of the Northern Marianas has approved the early termination of more than 140 limited term employees to help reduce the government's wages bill.

The Marianas Variety reports that officials estimate that there are more than 5,000 government employees, costing the government more than six milllion US dollars a fortnight.

Governor Fitial says the government simply cannot sustain a bloated workforce given the CNMI's economic slump, but he says some of the 147 could be reinstated if the government's financial situation improves.
