Samoa's Police Commissioner, Papali'i Lorenese Neru, has ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the release of two prisoners serving jail terms for serious offences.

The move comes after the attorney general, Brenda Heather Latu, wrote to the Commissioner after several members of the public raised concerns about the release of a convicted sexual offender currently serving a life sentence.

In a statement the Commissioner says another prisoner serving a 12 months sentence for possession of a large number of illegal fire-arms and ammunitions was also released for week-end parole.

He has asked the public to accept his apologies for any distress the releases may have caused.
