The police in the autonomous Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville say they are ready to escort five former Fijian soldiers from the province, should they be asked.
The Fiji High Commission in Papua New Guinea said earlier that negotiations with the supporters of the money scam operator, Noah Musingku, to allow the Fijians to leave, are going well.
The five have been in Tonu district illegally since late last year training a security unit for Noah Musingku, who has now abandoned them.
The acting assistant police commissioner, Paul Kamaui, says his officers would make a competent escort.
"Yeah, I'm quite confident we can do that; even if there is any conflict or any confrontations. We do not know of any now, at this point, unless something comes out when the exercise is taking place."
Paul Kamaui says the police will interrogate the Fijians about their time in Tonu.
