Kiribati PTA still awaiting USP probe outcome

3:22 pm on 10 July 2006

Kiribati's Parent Teacher Association is still awaiting the outcome of an inquiry into the government's allocation of scholarships.

The inquiry was called after it became known that 18 students were chosen for degree courses at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji despite failing the relevant selection criteria.

The probe was headed by Tuvaluan national Tito Isala and its members went to Kiribati and Fiji.

Although it was expected to have been completed in May, the PTA chairman, Dr Baua Tebau, says no information has been released.

"The parents are very interested to know what the outcome will be and everybody wants to know what's happening exactly and where the fault lies as to whether its us, or the University of the South Pacific or both? We don't know."
