Fiji Labour Party lawyer says branch suspension of MP a political gimmick

6:46 am on 11 July 2006

The Fiji Labour Party lawyer, Anand Singh, says the suspension of cabinet minister Krishna Datt by his Nasinu constituency branch last week was a political gimmick engineered by one man.

Fijilive quotes Anand Singh as saying the party's constitution was not properly followed when 19 members of the Nasinu Branch signed a petition suspending Mr Datt.

Mr Singh says Mr Datt was denied natural justice because the members could not suspend Mr Datt without proper procedures being followed.

Mr Datt is among five senior Labour Party members targetted by the Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, for disciplinary action and possible expulsion for questioning his leadership style after a dispute about his senate appointments.

The Labour Party's Nasinu Branch has withdrawn Mr Datt's suspension after most members revolted against it and has reinstated him.

Mr Datt has confirmed receiving a letter reinstating him.
