A French Polynesian fishing company says its boats have been under employed in the territory and that is why they are moving to Niue.

The Niue Government has granted five long liners from Pacific Fishing a one year licence to operate in its exclusive economic zone.

They will provide fish for the Niue Fish Processing factory which is operated as a joint venture by the Niue Government and New Zealand company, Reef Shipping.

A spokesman for Pacific Fishing company, Kim Than, says conditions in Niue are much better than in French Polynesia where around 100 long liners operate.

"Half of them are tied up and we have diminishing resources whereas Niue has plenty of resources which haven't been fished for about 14 years. It's only got two long liners, so we need boats in Niue and we need fish in Tahiti. So we thought we would move the boats to Niue - it's easier than moving the fish."
