Government employees will be temporarily laid off in the Northern Marianas until the administration finds funds to pay them.
Notices to affected employees are expected to be issued tomorrow.
Governor Fitial's Press secretary Charles P. Reyes, has told the Marianas Variety newspaper that public service personnel cannot be terminated by law, but they can be furloughed on a rolling basis.
This means that they could be asked not to report for work for up to 30 days.
After this period, they could return to work, and could possibly be furloughed again the following month.
Given the 30-day required notification, actual furloughs could possibly start in mid-August.
Mr Reyes could not say how many employees would be affected.
