CNMI government to be sued over pension law

The Northern Marianas' Retirement Fund is to sue the government for passing legislation suspending its contributions to the fund.

The government is obliged to pay the Retirement Fund 1.3 million US dollars per pay period.

The government's recently passed law suspends those payments until the end of the fiscal year 2007.

The Fund's board says it has a fudiciary duty to invest and protect the benefits of Fund members.

It says the suspension of contributions, a proposed 40-million US dollar loan for the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation and a pending write-off of more than 120 million in unfunded liability would all affect fund members.
