A bill in American Samoa says sponsors of foreigners allowed into American Samoa will have to pay a daily fine if those foreigners are found to be overstayers.

The Senate President, Lolo M. Moliga, has outlined the bill which he says should curtail and hopefully eliminate the ongoing problem of overstayers.

The bill proposes that any person who sponsors an alien shall pay 50 US dollars per day for every day the alien is determined to be in the territory illegally

A 100 US dollar fine will apply to businesses who sponsor overstaying their permits.

A government official says the majority of overstayers are from neighboring Samoa, who have exceeded their 14 or 30 day permits.
