Solomon Islands public servants pay rise welcomed by union

3:04 pm on 25 July 2006

The union representing Solomon Islands public servants says it is expecting to see the pay rise agreed to by the government show up in this week's pay packet.

The acting president of the Public Employees Union, George Vari, is welcoming the six percent pay rise plus a one-off seven percent lump sum payment awarded to public servants and teachers.

Mr Vari says they've been in contact with the Treasury department which is working on the issue, and expect the extra money to be in this Thursday's pay.

He says the union is pleased the government has awarded the rise.

"I think taking into account the timing of the present government, I think the union is very happy about the award given to the public servants and the teachers at this time."

Mr Vari says public servants will have to work harder to justify the extra money.
