American Samoa's fono taken to court

7:54 pm on 26 July 2006

An attorney has filed suit against his former employer, the American Samoa legislature, to obtain payment of unpaid compensation totalling 276,000 US dollars.

Robert Maez contends that he has not received any compensation for legal work that he did for the Fono from January to November 2004.

He had been asked by the former Senate President, Lutu Tenari Fuimaono, to submit invoices so that he could be paid which he did

Three different invoices were submitted which totaled 276,000 in unpaid wages.

But the Fono failed to pay the invoices, saying that legal services were not included in the budget and the Fono did not have any money to pay for his services.

After making numerous requests to be paid without results, Mr Maez decided to take the Fono to court.
