Police in the Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville say they are yet to make any arrests after five people were killed last weekend in the south of the main island.
The police commmander, Assistant Commissioner Paul Kamuai, says there is little he can say until investigations are completed but a PNG newspaper reports the victims were shot in an ambush.
A baby which was hurt in the attack is receiving medical treatment at Buka hospital.
The attack was in an area where rebel groups have been operating but Assistant Commissioner Kamuai says it does not appear to have been a political action.
"I think it would be criminal but at this point in time the investigation is being carried out but it appears to be a criminal matter not so much of being a militant matter, yes."
