Samoa launches first locally produced National Human Development Report

Samoa is one of a few countries in the South Pacific to write its own review in a National Human Development report which was launched over the weekend.

The preparations of these reports on Samoa in the past have been the prerogative of the United Nations Development Programme.

But after consultations with the Samoan government, UNDP then invited the Institute of Samoan studies at the National University to undertake the production.

Speaking at the launch, the Prime Minister Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi said the UNDP initiative to see that reports of this kind are produced periodically is greatly appreciated.

Tuila'epa says for Samoa a report of this nature gives the government and the people an opportunity to see where the country is heading in terms of its development needs.

The UNDP's Resident Representative in Samoa, Naheed Haque, said the findings of the report gave an insight into the inner memory of the Samoan communities, which deserved to be heard and addressed by their leaders.
