Samoa launches one month gun amnesty

Samoa has launched a Firearms Amnesty programme that will run till the end of the month.

A notice issued by the Minister for Police, Prisons and Fire Services asks people to hand in firearms or ammunition that are unregistered, unsafe or unlawful.

An unlawful weapon includes a machine gun, pistol or any other class of firearms except a shotgun , a .22 caliber single shot rifle or an air gun.

According go the notice people in possession of such weapons or guns and ammunition which are unregistered will not be prosecuted if they hand them in during the one month amnesty.

Those who are found to be in possession after the period expires will be prosecuted.

Any weapon deemed to be unlawful or unsafe cannot be licensed.
