PNG budget boost to deal with teacher pay issues

7:09 pm on 2 August 2006

The Papua New Guinea Education Minister, Michael Laimo, says an additional 13 million US dollars from this week's supplementary budget will help offset the outstanding back log of pay claims for teachers.

Mr Laimo says teachers in the national education system have been underpaid over the years.

He says the money shows that the government is committed to addressing the grievances raised by the teachers.

Mr Laimo also thanked the government for providing nearly a million US dollars for upgrading classrooms and facilities at Bana High School in his South Bougainville electorate.

He says Bana High School is located in a rebel stronghold area and the Government's commitment will go a long way to helping the school to continue to operate.
