The Cook Islands Netball Association has invited two New Zealand Silver Ferns to help run a junior development programme for seven to 12 year olds.

Midcourter Temapara George and defender Vilimaina Davu will spend a week on Rarotonga to assist the youngsters.

The Association's Nadine Newnham says plans for such a workshop have been in the pipeline for a while.

"Last year we decided we needed something to drive the interest of our younger players to get back that commitment to grow the grassrooots level up, so that when we have our teams that go away in the future we can hopefully have more homegrown players."

Temapara George has firm ideas on what she wants to pass on to young Cook Island netballers.

I was talking to some of the officials here, and they're saying it kinda loses interest, and some of the girls lose interest in the sport so yeah trying to get the interest back, but also to pass on some basic skills that they need as youngsters for their future if they want to carry on in netball.

Meawhile, defender Vilimaina Davu says Fiji winning the right to hold next year's World Netball Championships will benefit all Pacific countries.

Davu says she knows Fiji won't be on their own when it comes to next year's champs in Suva.

Most of the Pacific Islands are supporting Fiji, with Samoa, Cook Islands, and other Pacific Island countries and it's not only Fiji's name but it's representing all the Pacific Island countries, and I'm proud to be Pacific Islander and having that tournament held in Fiji.
