Concern over delay in announcing new police commissioner in Vanuatu

6:15 am on 7 August 2006

The anti-corruption organisation, Transparency International Vanuatu, says it is extremely disturbing that there is continuing delay in the announcement of a police commissioner.

The post has been vacant since 2002 and an announcement was expected at the end of May.

The president of TI Vanuatu, Marie-Noelle Ferrieux-Patterson, says no one understands why it is taking so long to announce the appointment.

"Everybody understands that the appointment is still with the president's office. But there is no official confirmation about what is happening. The problem is that maybe it is a candidate where some problems have appeared and they are reviewing the situation, we don't know. But I think it is a concern. ."

The minister for internal affairs, George Wells, has said a ni-Vanuatu will fill the position.
