A spokesperson for an NGO in Samoa helping abused women says taking some of the firearms out of the community will help with the battle against domestic violence.

During the month of August, the police are running an amnesty and are asking people to hand in unregistered or illegal weapons and ammunition.

A spokesperson for Mapusaga O Aiga, Maiava Visekota Peteru, says violence involving guns is on the increase:

"There have been recent incidences involving domestic violence and then the use of a weapon and although when these incidences headline as a murder within a family context, if you look at the overall situation these are incidence of domestic violence."
