Kiribati's Former Secretary to Cabinet and opposition MP Dr Tetaua Taitai is optimistic that the president will release the findings of a commission of inquiry into the awarding of university scholarships.
The probe was called after it became known that none of the students to pass the test was given a scholarship while all those who were allowed to go had failed the test.
Dr Taitai says President Anote Tong had promised to release the findings during the last parliamentary session although by law he could choose to keep it confidential.
Dr Taitai says the president needs to release the findings because the matter is in the public's interest.
He says the expense for the scholarships is substantial.
"I think it would be running in the hundreds of thousands of dollars I think, which is quite a lot of money for Kiribati and there's quite a bit from local funding and some from the donors such as New Zealand or Australia."
