Solomon Islands Prime Minister says another ethnic crisis a possibility

Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, says there could be another ethnic crisis in the country if the underlying causes of ethnic tension are not addressed.

Mr Sogavare says the same issues that arose in 1978 with the Western separatist movement were again present in 1998.

The Prime Minister says the biggest concern is the possibility of more trouble in 2008 over the same issues.

Mr Sogovare says the the two key causes of the earlier troubles were the failure of the government system and tensions over the way people's cultures were treated by other groups.

He says the new government's policies, including a new federal constitution, are aimed at resolving those issues.
