Solomon Islands group demands progress on Malaitan development projects

3:16 pm on 10 August 2006

A political grassroots group is petitioning the Solomon Islands prime minister to make progress on two development projects in Malaita.

The Ma'asina Forum has given Manasseh Sogavare notice that the government must speed up action on the Bin Harbour and Aluta Basin projects in Malaita.

The Ma'asina Forum's general secretary, William Gua, says the government must come good on its commitment to develop these two important projects.

He says the last government had said it had funding ready to develop Bin Harbour, but so far nothing has happened.

Mr Gua says the projects will provide employment for the thousands of Malaitans living in Honiara.

He says projects in other provinces have gone on ahead but the government is stalling on developments in Malaita.

Mr Gua says they may hold peaceful protests if there is no progress by the end of the week.
