Fiji Chamber of Commerce supports proposal to develop medical tourism

8:05 pm on 10 August 2006

The Fiji Chamber of Commerce is fully behind a proposal for a large Indian company to set up a private hospital in Fiji.

The chamber's president, Taito Waradi, says the Apollo Group is interested in providing a full range of services that would cater for the local population as well as the tourist market.

He says the chamber supports the proposal to develop medical tourism because although tourist numbers have been high in recent years, that may taper off.

Mr Waradi says it is simply developing another segment of the market which is well established in other parts of the world.

"The Apollo group, a hospital chain in India, have already secured a site in Lautoka for such a facility so we are hoping that in the next year or two, that we should see this actually eventuating - heart transplant, the whole range of medical treatment."
