The former Speaker of Fiji's House of Representatives, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, is to lead a 12-member Commonwealth Observer Mission to observe general elections in Guyana later this month.

Ratu Epeli has been chosen by the Commonwealth secretary general, Don McKinnon, who has also invited the former Fiji Labour Party senator, Dr Atu Emberson-Bain, to be part of the mission.

Ratu Epeli has previously been a Commonwealth observer in the Bougainville elections.

Mr McKinnon has also invited Ratu Epeli to be the spokesman for the Commonwealth at the 13th International Aids Conference which is being held in Toronto, Canada, this week.

Mr McKinnon says this will be an extension to Ratu Epeli's role as the regional spokesman on the campaign against HIV/AIDS in the Pacific.
