PNG mob storms plane in bid to get free trip

1:28 pm on 15 August 2006

A group of 50 men has stormed a passenger plane in Papua New Guinea's highlands, trying to hitch a free ride to the capital.

The men rushed the Airlines PNG plane at Wapenamanda Airport in Enga Province, after the provincial governor Peter Ipatas and former prime minister Paias Wingti flew in on the chartered aircraft.

As thousands gathered to greet the pair, dozens of men rushed the stairs leading to the plane door, pushing aside an air stewardess and clambering over each other to grab a seat.

But their hopes of a free ride to Port Moresby were dashed when police ejected them.

About 40 men were arrested.

Mr Ipatas was returning from the capital where he had just avoided being dismissed from office by a Leadership Tribunal which fined him instead on several counts of misconduct in office.
