A short but strong earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the open Richter scale was felt in the Tongan capital, Nuku'alofa.
The quake shook buildings for a few seconds.
There are no reports of damage.
It followed a moderate quake of magnitude 5 earlier in the day.
