New Caledonia hotel to reopen after year-long strike

A hotel in New Caledonia which closed because of a strike a year ago, will reopen next month.

Local press reports say the Novotel Surf will open 109 of its 238 rooms and convert the remaining accommodation into small apartments.

The reports say only 33 people will be employed, a drop from the 73 staff working there before the hotel shut down amid industrial action by the CSNTC union.

The strike is said to have incurred the owners losses of about five million US dollars.
