The Fiji Eco Tourism Association says there is a need for more focused surveys on the various segments within tourism.

The association told the Fiji Times it also believes that more Government support is needed in order to facilitate development within the backpacking industry.

Speaking at the opening of a workshop on the Backpackers Industry in Nadi on Wednesday, President, Viliame Koyamaibole said such focused surveys within the industry were a long-awaited initiative.

He said the backpacking industry is very important to Fiji especially after it was rated among the top10 backpacking destinations.

Mr Koyamaibole says previously, the Fiji Visitors Bureau and Ministry of Tourism carried out international visitor surveys that studied the whole industry.

But he says we need more focused surveys on the various segments to improve each sector.
