Pitcairn police costs lowered

Estimates of the cost of policing Pitcairn Island have been scaled down by officials.

It was understood that the yearly cost of law enforcement for Pitcairn was at least 250,000 US dollars, but a spokeswoman for the British Foreign Office in London says the annual bill is 160,000 US dollars.

She said this referred to the 'cost of policing' in total, but did not indicate whether this included the sending of two defence force police officers to the island on three-monthly rotations.

The official would only say Britain is committed to policing Pitcairn's small community since it is a British Overseas Territory.
