SPC banks on diabetes prevention

The Secretariat of the Pacific Community says a strategic alliance created to address the prevention of diabetes is awarding 1000 US dollars for the best grassroot level diabetes prevention project in the region.

The SPC's Dr Viliami Puloka says it wants to encourage community level programmes aimed at preventing the disease.

"What we are really looking for is, especially in the small countries, little money like 1000 US dollars will go a long way in maybe setting up a project encouraging the patients themselves, empower them to form a group so that they can support each other, sharing their experience and those sort of grassroot activities. 21"

Dr Puloka says government bodies, recognised NGOs and all other associations are welcome to apply.

He says all applications will be reviewed at the end of next month, and the results will be announced during the 19th World Diabetes Congress in Cape Town in December.
