Oil Search being told to come clean on spill

Papua New Guinea's Gulf Governor wants the country's major energy company Oil Search Limited to tell the truth about this month's oil spill.

Governor Chris Haiveta said in a statement that based on information he had received, the company was playing down the actual size of the spill.

The spill has put into doubt the signing of the Kutubu memorandum of agreement, and the governor has asked that the agreement be reviewed.

Mr Haiveta said a two hour delay on Aug 9 alerting authorities allowed more than 240,000 litres of oil to be pumped into the waters of Gulf Province.
