Transparency International Fiji urges change in attitude among public servants

The Director of Transparency International Fiji, Richard Naidu, wants to see a complete change in attitude among public servants when it comes to the use of public funds.

Mr Naidu has told a regional seminar on anti-corruption measures that the local public service commission is unable to effectively discipline civil servants who step out of line.

He would like to see the Commission tighten procedures to allow more effective action to be taken against those involved in corrupt practices.

But he believes a wider shake-up is needed.

"Part of it is just changing the culture, trying to get people to buy into the idea of accountability and stewardship, but of course you have to back that up with systems and laws that are effective."
