Fiji Methodists fail to get membeship fee hike

1:52 pm on 31 August 2006

The annual conference of Fiji's Methodist Church has rejected a proposal by its management to increase the levy imposed on members by 50 percent from 10 Fiji dollars to 15 dollars.

All 214,000 members of the Methodist Church from new born babies to the elderly have to pay the levy.

But Radio Legend reports that when the proposal for the increase was presented to delegates today by the church's chief accountant and its senior officials, it was rejected.

The officials had earlier disclosed that in the last financial year they ran up a deficit of more than 406,000 US dollars.

Meanwhile, the Methodist Church's fundraising during its annual conference has raised 1.8 million US dollars with the members of Rotuma alone giving over 180,000 US dollars.
