US bars Taiwan's president from Guam stop - report

3:03 pm on 31 August 2006

The United States has reportedly barred Taiwan's presidential plane from refuelling in Guam on a trip to Palau.

Taiwanese media say Washington believes that President Chen Shui-bian's trip to Palau is for what it describes as propaganda purposes.

The Palau visit is to host Taipei's Pacific allies in the Pacific, four months after China hosted a similar summit in Fiji for Pacific countries recognising Beijing.

The United Daily News in Taipei says the Philippines has been approached for a refuelling stop but the response has been contradictary.

While claiming that Manila has agreed, it quotes an official as saying that the Taiwanese president won't be allowed to transit.
