Former Solomon Islands Foreign Minister in court over Honiara riot

The Honiara Magistrates Court has rejected a bail application by former Solomon Islands Foreign Affairs Minister, Alex Bartlett.

Bartlett was arrested and charged on Monday with one count of conspiracy to commit a felony in relation to the Honiara April 18th Riot.

The riot led to the looting and burning of Chinese owned shops and businesses following the election of Snyder Rini as prime minister.

The Magistrates Court refused Bartlett's bail application on various grounds, including fears that he might interfere with police investigations and with crown witnesses since he was an influential man in the community.

Bartlett was released on bail in February this year because of his health condition after having spent 17-months in police custody on ethnic tension related charges.
