3:26 pm on 1 September 2006

The final report on political change in Tonga has been presented to the King of Tonga's daughter.

The king has been in hospital in Auckland since early this year.

The National Committee for Political Reform report is based on months of meetings in Tonga, New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

The committee's vice chairman, Sitiveni Halapua, says the report will now be tabled in Parliament as a step towards unity and economic change.

"The mandate was for the committee to speak with the people, let the people tell us their stories, how they see the political situation in Tonga, what their hopes are."
