7:46 pm on 4 September 2006

The Tonga Electric Power Board has just announced a

5.21 seniti increase per kilowatt hour in the price of electricity.

The Matangi Tonga online reports that by the end of the year, that could translate into a 35-point-6% increase for domestic consumers nationwide.

The increase will take effect from Shoreline's September billing cycle.

The Minister of Finance had recommended a smaller rise.

The increase in the electricity rate is put down to the rising cost of fuel.
