The Deputy Premier of Guadalcanal Province in Solomon Islands, Stephen Panga has expressed grave concerns about plans by Australia Solomon Gold to open up an old tailings dam.
Mr Panga says this will be disastrous for downstream communities along the Matepono river.
He says poisonous chemicals in the dam will have long-lasting effects on the river and the people downstream.
The SIBC reports Australia Solomon Gold has not been available for comment.
