Samoan prison officers plead not guilty to assault charge

2:09 pm on 7 September 2006

The court case against three Samoan prison officers facing charges of assault has been adjourned for a hearing in late January after they entered a not guilty plea in the District Court.

The officers, constables Musu Tala'i, Posenai Sui and Filipo Galu, have been charged with the alleged beating of an inmate early last month.

The inmate was badly hurt.

Court documents say the prisoner, Junior Roache, was beaten when he tried to escape police custody.

Several inmates are expected to give evidence during the hearing in support of the three prison officers who are suspended until the case is completed
