Togiola defends American Samoa bid for Savaii site

American Samoa's governor, Togiola Tulafono, says there is not enough land in Manu'a to set up a training site for the military and local law enforcement staff.

He says this is the reason why he asked the Samoa government for land on Savai'i island.

Both the Senate and the House have called on the governor to consider Manu'a for the project.

Governor Togiola says he has looked at Manu'a but there is no land big enough to assure safe operations of shooting ranges and combat training exercises

He says Ta'u island in Manu'a was the only viable place but safe distance could not be assured.
