Samoa court orders chiefs to reconcile

1:26 pm on 12 September 2006

The chiefs of a divided village in Samoa have been ordered by a court to reconcile.

The order followed a petition by a group in the village of Solosolo, who wanted the Court to approve their decision to ostracise one matai and his family, and the children of another matai from the village.

In their petition, the chiefs claimed the group had disrupted the peace in the village and refused to oblige with village penalties.

The court ruled in favour of the petition and said the matai must apologise, and oblige with the village penalties imposed by the plaintiff chiefs.
