The Fiji government has been forced to divert 34-million US dollars from this year's national budget to meet unplanned expenditure.

The Fiji Times reports that the cabinet has approved the finance minister, Ratu Jone Kubuabola's request to divert the funds from various government departments to meet the extra demands.

Of the 34-million dollars, 4.5 million went to pay for general election expenses earlier this year while 29.5 million is for the payment of higher salaries and allowances.

The government has already paid out millions of dollars in Cost of Living Adjustments last month and will pay further installments in October and December.

The cabinet has also approved an additional 1-point-5 million US dollars to be paid out in increased allowances for civil servants.
