New media rules on-hold in Cook Islands

6:03 am on 18 September 2006

The caretaker Cook Islands Prime Minister, Jim Marurai says controversial plans to set up a government-controlled media commission are on hold.

Radio Cook Islands reports Mr Marurai said he did not agree with the proposed Media Act, under which the commission would be set up.

He says the proposals go against media freedom.

Mr Marurai says media freedom was based on the fundamental human rights of all people to freedom of information and expression.

Jim Marurai says the proposed law instead seemed punitive.
