Indonesian vessel arrested in PNG waters

The Papua New Guinea police and fisheries officers say they have captured an Indonesian fishing vessel and its crew north of Australian waters.

Illegal Indonesian fishing vessels pose a continuing problem for Australian and PNG authorities in their territorial waters.

Police say the fishermen are in custody on the PNG island of Daru after their boat was intercepted about four kilometres south of Kiwai Island on Thursday.

Police say local villagers saw the boat and raised the alarm with police and the National Fisheries Authority officers who went in pursuit.

The detained fisherman face charges of illegal fishing and illegal entry.
