Solomons opposition wants Forum to heal breach with Australia

8:28 am on 19 September 2006

The Solomon Islands opposition leader, Fred Fono, is calling on the Pacifc Islands Forum to step in and solve the diplomatic dispute between the Solomon Islands and Australian government.

Mr Fono says as the forum has been pushing for a united region, it should feel responsible for the issue and help find a solution before its next summit in Nadi in October.

He says the forum's secretary general, Greg Irwin, could arrange a meeting in New York, where the two countries' foreign ministers are attending the United Nations assembly.

He also says the chair of the forum, the Papua New Guinea prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, could act as a mediator.
