Solomons government moves to heal diplomatic breach with Australia

10:11 am on 19 September 2006

The Solomons Islands Government intends sending a high level ministerial team to Canberra to try and resolve the diplomatic row following the expulsion of the Australian high commissioner.

Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, says he is also willing to seek out Australia's foreign minister when they meet at the United Nations this week.

He says talking is the only way to sort out the problem.

Mr Sogavare says he has asked New Zealand to help.

"I am actively engaging Minister Peters to do talks between us and Australia. He offered his services to us. I've since been using him. I'm meeting with Mr Peters in New York and I will be glad to meet with Alexander Downer."

A spokesperson for New Zealand foreign minister, Winston Peters, says he has not agreed to mediate in the row.

Mr Sogavare says he will send his delegation to speak with Mr Howard after he gets back from New York.
