Palau focuses on health worker training

7:28 pm on 20 September 2006

Palau's Director of Public health, Dr Stevenson Kuartei, says the country's priority in health is to train and keep its health workers.

He says like many other countries in the Pacific, Palau is challenged to expand its select health services and train unskilled workers.

Dr Kuartei says the government has introduced two training programmes for local nurses which have been very successful.

He says Palau wants to establish closer links with regional training organisations and expand its resources to develop training in areas such as medical laboratory sciences and radiology.

Dr Kuartei addressed the World Health Organisation meeting for Western Pacific countries being held in Auckland.
